Check the notes a score expects against a spectrum, then look for anything
else.
Expected notes are tested first at a lower bar — and a quiet chord tone
whose partials all stand clearly above their local floors counts even when
louder notes dwarf it; their harmonic series are subtracted; whatever the
residual still supports is reported as extra. The score lowers the bar but
never invents: an expected note with no support is missing; an expected
note whose semitone neighbour is clearly louder is missing too (that
neighbour was played), as is one that is really the note an octave below
(unless the score expects that note as well); and strong unexpected
evidence is still extra.
